Ways To Manage Seo Expectations
Sometimes with SEO you can do everything right and still not bring in the traffic you that you hoped for. Businesses are rarely an overnight success and this also goes for SEO. When running a business, it is necessary to set up a business plan with realistic expectations. You can outline a fantasy of where you'd like to be in a year or more, but you should also elucidate where it is most likely you'll be after the year is over.
The good thing about realistic expectations is that you're rarely disappointed. At the same time, businesses should never aim too low. Aim at a level of progress that is a step forward but not like winning the lottery. When it comes to SEO, you're going to want to build up fresh and informative content, link exchanges, pay-per-click programs and more. Do not set a goal of 10,000 hits an hour because this is not a realistic goal.
Hits aren't everything. If you have been smart about targeting content towards a specific demographic, your business's sales or sign-ups may reflect the marketing plan—i.e. you should gauge an SEO plan by the sales generated, not necessarily by the traffic. Even if your traffic is not exponential, this can be offset by the number of sales. On the flipside, if your sales aren't picking up yet, but your traffic is gaining, you can feel sated by the fact that things are improving.
So long as your SEO plan has had some kind of impact—increased traffic or sales—you should be satisfied. Of course, you'd love to sell out your entire inventory and have a brand be a household name, but to start you should be satisfied that the site is performing better than it was before and then look for ways to improve on the current model.
The most important thing to remember is this: any SEO plan requires patience. It can take awhile to reap the benefits of even the most expert SEO plan. It takes some time for a site to rise up in the ranks. A new Google ranking, for example, won't be changed every time you update the site. You also have to wait for web surfers to start plugging in relevant keywords. What it comes down to is search engine optimization should be a given, but you need to manage the expectations game just as you would manage a website.
